BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON
AT THE PEACE RIVER WILDLIFE CENTER
He’s mad with nest-building.
He can’t help himself. Something
with an urgency like hunger
tells him: if he builds it well
she will come,
a mate, her head crowned
with three fine feathers like his,
rare plumes others have died for.
So all day
he scavenges the cage floor,
collects sticks and branches,
weaves them into a nest,
and each evening tears it up again.
She will never come,
though he’s diligent as a schoolboy
and handsome as any bird here.
